Biography of Felipe Echevarria

A teacher's comments toward his 1990 graduating portfolio revealed an interesting circumstance: Felipe's artistic strengths could be successfully applied to any art field I wanted to go into. It has been both a curse and a blessing. Well rounded, probably, but what should he do with it? It took a 14-year chronic illness to squeeze it out of him. Being pushed so far mentally and emotionally deep into his body and mind from daily discomfort and pain changed his perceptions towards life, and towards art. Almost every painting and drawing he does now is designed to pry the viewer's mind to other ways of perceiving reality. His vision in the arts, it's to have the ability to shift someone's perceptions of this world while they view his work, either consciously or unconsciously, and reaffirm their connection to the divine. Right now he is working to make this into a full reality.

Felipe was born in San Diego, California. His mother is from Tennesee and my father's side originates from Spain and South America (hence the Basque name).

He entered the professional commercial art world quickly upon graduation. Most notably he painted a sequential art adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho and an issue of the newer Dark Shadows TV series through Innovation Publishing and Universal Studios. As a represented illustrator he has painted for many companies. As a fine artist his work has been displayed in many galleries and in group and two-man shows. He taught painting, figure drawing, and sequential art classes for several institutions, including the Loveland Academy of Fine Art and the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Both his fine art and sequential art reside in collections across North America and Western Europe.
